Enhancing Food Security and Rural Household Income OICI does more than give rural farmers new tools; we also provide better seeds and improved livestock, and give the skills to start their own small businesses. We also provide rural communities with the assistance necessary to ensure that they live healthy, food-secure lives.
OUR APPROACH
OICI Food Security Programs focus on ways to improve farming production and sustainability, by teaching growing, processing and marketing skills that will generate more product and more profit, be respectful of environmental conditions and ultimately improve the quality of life for farmers and their families.
Specific areas of intervention that OICI has the expertise to implement include:
- Post-harvest processing and storage training
- Bullock traction
- Agro-forestry
- Inventory credit
- Post-harvest management and processing
- Storage and agricultural marketing
- Formation of farming groups
OICI works with partner NGOs and provides direct technical assistance to farmer groups in their communities. Teams of field extension agents/facilitators live and work with the selected groups in their respective communities. These agents promote changes in attitudes in addition to improving their clients' skills in agriculture. OICI aims to foster food and income secure environments by promoting:
- Business and microenterprise development
- Natural resource management
- Maternal and child health and nutrition
- Water management and sanitation
