Improving Health through Education OICI's health programs focus on providing health education and improving water and sanitation infrastructure to ensure that people have the knowledge to remain healthy
OUR APPROACH
OICI helps communities where malnutrition is high, water and sanitation levels are inadequate, and where there is a need for family planning and reproductive health education, including on issues related to HIV/AIDS.
OICI recognizes that to improve health in developing areas, it must develop comprehensive programs that target both the direct and indirect causes of poor health and nutrition. In this regard, OICI often integrates health projects into its skills development, community development and food security programs.
OICI has experience in developing and implementing the following health sector projects:
- Improving access to clean water sources
- Influencing positive behavior change in relation to hygiene and sanitation
- Providing health skills education
- Improving maternal and child health and nutrition
- Educating communities on family planning issues
- Providing adolescent reproductive health training
OICI also has significant experience in implementing HIV/AIDS programs in several African countries and often partners with other NGOs to offer the most comprehensive and effective programs possible. With regard to HIV/AIDS, OICI has experience in implementing the following types of programs:
- HIV/AIDS prevention education
- Peer education training and support
- Psychological & social counseling
- Economic support services for people living with HIV/AIDS
- Orphaned and vulnerable children support
OICI’s basic approach in the health sector is to provide education and services to youth and adults to help them develop responsible and positive attitudes towards their personal and community health. Project beneficiaries typically access OICI’s services through:
- OICI skills training centers
- Out-of-school youth clubs
- In-school youth clubs
- Peer educators
