The Gambia Opportunities Industrialization Centers (TGOIC)
DATE ESTABLISHED1978
MISSIONTo introduce intermediate level farm technology and handicraft skills to young Gambians and rural women seeking skills for income-earning opportunities for a sustainable livelihood.
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEWTGOIC is located in the Upper Baddibou District, approximately 10 kilometers west of the regional capital of Farafenni. In the Gambia, the government lays great emphasis on youth, women and rural development, but its limited resources are inadequate to make the desired impact in rural communities. The government therefore encourages foreign investment in rural areas, and also seeks partnerships in order to build successful local institutions. TGOIC is one such partnership that has been developed.
TGOIC is a base-training and self-development center for rural youth, rural women and adult farmers. Trainees are provided the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in the areas of farming (crops and livestock), handicraft skills, entrepreneurship and other income-generating activities that are necessary to help rural households obtain sustainable livelihoods.
PROGRAMSThe TGOIC program offers a variety of courses ranging from vegetable gardening to cash crops and from animal husbandry to rural development. Most of the clients are rural youth who have left the formal track of education. Graduates tend to be self-employed as farmers. In order to increase food security, TGOIC maintains the following objectives:
- Increase agricultural production by training young adult farmers modern, appropriate and environmentally-sound agricultural techniques
- Provide training in agro-processing and value adding to farmers and provide credit for purchase of necessary equipment
- Strengthen and expand TGOIC's training and production units in order to reach more farmers and help them to generate more income for their households
Specific training and education programs are offered in the following areas:
- Civics education
- Rural economics
- Communication skills
- Agricultural measurements
- Agricultural enterprise management
- Crop production
- Animal husbandry
- Agricultural marketing
- Handicraft skills
- Family life education (including reproductive health and HIV/AIDS)
