Cameroon Opportunities Industrialization Centers (COIC)

DATE ESTABLISHED 1986

MISSIONCOIC aims to give the Cameroonian community--particularly the underprivileged--capacity-building services through skills training programs so that they can obtain gainful employment.

VISION
COIC is working to become the first Human Resource Development Centre for middle-class technicians in Cameroon.  Through community-based institutions, COIC will provide training services and assist in placing skilled Cameroonians into the business sector or helping them to create their own businesses.  COIC is working to ensure that in five years, 30% of its budget will be provided through cost-recovery initiatives, including social enterprises and economic ventures.

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEWCOIC is the largest indigenous NGO involved with Job Training & Employment Generation in Cameroon.  COIC works to provide basic marketable skills training and job support services to underprivileged youth, retrenched workers, retired workers and members of the community in Cameroon.  Since COIC's inception, over 7,000 individuals have received skills training and small-enterprise development services either on COIC's campus or through its community outreach programs.  Because of COIC's long history of involvement in Cameroon, it now provides capacity-building services to other non-profit and community-building organizations in the country through its Rural Training Unit and its Small Enterprise Unit.

PROGRAMSCOIC focuses on assisting young unemployed youth, retrenched and retired workers, and members of the business community. The selection of these target groups reflects the national desire to address the problems of youth unemployment and the emerging skilled labor needs of the region.

COIC provides vocational skills training in the areas of:
  • Carpentry
  • Masonry
  • Motor mechanics
  • Hotel catering
  • Management/business development
COIC also provides a range of other services, including:
  • Information technology
  • Small-business management
  • Business development
  • Job counselling
ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Over 3500 individuals have received skills training services
  • Approximately 600 graduates have created their own small-businesses
  • 2500 Cameroonians have received training through COIC's community outreach programs
