Opportunities Industrialization Centers Côte d'Ivoire (OIC-CI)
DATE ESTABLISHED 1986
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEWOIC-CI's principal mission is to contribute to the fight against unemployment, rural migration and to work in-line with the government's own goals of reducing poverty through human resource development. OIC-CI employs a comprehensive program strategy with project areas in skills development, microenterprise development and food security to address the development challenges that the country faces.
PROGRAMS
Agriculture and Livestock Breeding Assistance
- Production: In rural communities, there is a need to increase the quantity, variety and quality of food that the population regularly consumes. OIC-CI supports projects aiming to provide support to subsistence farmers to ensure that they maximize the use of their land through environmentally-sustainable production methods. OIC-CI implements training programs in agriculture and livestock breeding, sustainable agriculture production, education, and health and nutrition to improve the food security indicators in rural Cote d’Ivoire.
- Marketing: OIC-CI provides subsistence farmers with training in marketing, production and distribution of their produce to ensure that they maximize their profits.
- Business Management: OIC-CI teaches recipients how to effectively manage the funds that they have and how to successfully re-invest profits from their businesses. The goal is for them to develop their business and thus improve their living conditions and household food security.
- Recipients: Subsistence farmers (men and women); unemployed youth.
Information Technology Training
- Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Publisher): Information technology and data-processing has become an integral skill for the 21st century. OIC-CI offers training in these areas to ensure that disadvantaged youth are learning cutting-edge skills.
- Advanced Courses: OIC-CI offers advanced courses, which are specifically targeted to those who plan to use their knowledge to teach computer skills to others.
- Internet Navigation
- Design and Database Training: OIC-CI recognizes that database and graphics design skills are increasingly required in the labor market. OIC-CI thus offers training in Corel, Adobe Illustrate, Photoshop and Page Maker, and in other graphics software.
- Recipients: Young graduates in search of employment; administrative assistants looking to improve their data processing skills; company employees looking to improve their information technology skills set.
Microenterprise Development
- OIC-CI’s microenterprise development services assist rural and urban entrepreneurs to start, improve and diversify their small businesses. Our main focus is centered on developing micro-credit groups where the members are responsible for group formation, loan distribution and loan repayment enforcement. We provide training in the form of course modules and seminars to teach participants how to create a small business, how to manage a business, and how to effectively profit from their enterprise.
- Recipients: Farmer’s groups; informal sector businesses; agriculture distributors and producers
Environmental Sustainability Education
- Solar energy: OIC-CI has found that the lack of electricity in rural area constitutes a major handicap to development. To address this problem, OIC-CI has initiated a renewable energy program, with the main focus being on bringing solar energy to rural households and communities.
- Renewable energy: OIC-CI has experience in extracting natural gas for energy needs in rural areas.
- Recipients: Rural households, businesses and communities.
Health/Nutrition Interventions
- Immunizations and HIV/AIDS Awareness: OIC-CI works in rural areas of Cote d’Ivoire to ensure that children are receiving essential vaccinations and immunizations to prevent communicable diseases. OIC-CI also works to fights the HIV/AIDS epidemic by training local educators on the disease and organizing public awareness campaigns.
- Food Security: OIC-CI works to increase agricultural productivity in order to increase the availability and quality of food in rural areas. OIC-CI provides training to subsistence farmers in the areas of production, post-production processing, and post-harvest storage.
- Infrastructure: OIC-CI helps to improve water and sanitation facilities in rural areas by constructing water fountains, latrines, etc.
- Recipients: Men, women and children in rural areas.
